Saturday 30th September - 1st October 2023 Address - 124 Denshires Road South, Wakanui
RIDE BRIEF
The EventA huge thank you to the incredible land owners.Campbell and Rachelle McBain for the use of the park like base paddock, and farm land. They have been totally amazing as always. Along with Andrew and Nicky West, Paul Leadly and Mat Patton, this awesome group of farmers has made the track what it is and I am sure you will all appreciate there efforts.
The event officially opens at 12.30pm on Friday 29 September and will close on Sunday 01 October at 5pm. Camping is available for this period and toilets are on base. Ride BriefThis is a general ride brief and information. Please make sure you attend your ride briefing at the specified time during the weekend. Track information has been provided below. Please ensure you obey all road rules. Important information will be given at the ride brief on the day, along with important information about any hazards to be aware of. All riders MUST ATTEND, no exceptions Ride BaseUse 124 Denshires Road South as the location addrress. This is not exactly correct but is the closest to the ride base paddock which is not far from the intersection of Seafield Road and Denshires Road South. Please ensure you are entering ride base where stated on the ride base map below. This south entrance is for vehicles and the north entrance is for horses only as part of the track. Please park sensibly in straight lines if possible. Please refer to the ride base map below. BibsYour bib is available for collection from the Club Trailer. Please remove it from the plastic bag and leave the bag in the container. You will need to collect this prior to vetting in. Please return the bib to the Club Trainer when you have finished. If you are riding both days you will receive a new bib the next day. Vetting inYour pre-ride vet in time is included below. When you have finished your ride and come for your post-ride vet in, there will be an area marked in front of the vet ring where you need to call out “time” and your bib number. This is so Wendy can record your vet in time to ensure it is within the allocated time you have been given. If there is a queue at the vet ring and you are near the end of your vet time, make sure you let Wendy know you are there.
Prize givingThere will be a prize giving at the end of each day along with a sausage sizzle and yummy cake. Please do stay around for this social event. We make every effort to try and time things to finish as early as possible but it does depend on when riders finish. Event Results will be posted.
General housekeeping 1. Rubbish – manure, rubbish, hay and feed needs to be collected and removed from base. The base is to be left as you find it. Absolutely no rubbish is to be left on base or on the track. If you drop something, please make sure you pick it up. 2. Fire extinguisher - There will be a fire extinguisher in the Canterbury Club Trailer. Any emergency needs to be reported to Wendy Farnell, Ursula Keenan or Dave Hadler as soon as possible. Please use your common sense around this.
On Track 1. Track manners - Please be courteous of other competitors at all times. There is common ground on the track so if you would like to pass, please ask if it is okay and give the competitor/s plenty of room. If you are with a group at water points, please allow those there first a chance to drink and move off before you allow your horse to drink. Many horses will be put off drinking when a strange horse approaches, it is particularly important to respect the horses competing over longer distances. Even if your horse is friendly, please keep space between you and other horses. Horses with red ribbons in their tails should be treated as if they could kick, blue ribbons are for stallions. You should give all horses as much space as possible for their safety and yours. If there are CTR riders at the finish line having heart rates taken, please be respectful of this. 2. Water – There will be good access to water on track. There is a mixture of troughs and filled tubs. If there are some tubs that need filling, please let an official at base know. 3. Markers - Arrows, dazzled milk bottles and road markers. There is a lot of common ground. Each loop will be marked with loop markers “30”, “20” and “10”. Where these loops separate they will be marked with a directional arrow and loop marker. You will come across these from time to time, so just follow the loop you are on. There is lots of twisting and turning, so as always, don’t look behind you.
4. Course – Gate ways – these are all marked on BOTH SIDES with either arrows or milk bottles. Do not go through a gate way that is not marked on both sides. Paddocks – Marked with road markers, please follow in and out using these, and do not vary to far away from them. Common ground – please keep to your left when other horses are approaching. Hazards – there are a number of irrigation hoses and pipes on the sides of lane ways and in paddocks, please do not ride on these. There will be a marker with a milk bottle at the start and end of the ones that may be hidden. We have done our best to identify all other hazards, again marked with milk bottles, however you will need to keep an eye out for things as you normally would. There are a number of wire strand electric fences, none of which you need to go through. Normal farm activity will be part of this event. Loops - 30km loop: This loop will head out of base and follow the 30km signs. Early in the ride there is an intersection shown below. The first time you arrive here you will follow the 30km – Loop 1. The second time, 30km – Loop 2. This is simple, so don’t over think it, and the same for both 30km loops of the 80km event. We will endeavour to have a check point here also. The rest of the loop is easy to follow, again don’t look behind you and follow the markers in front of you. 20km loop: This is a shortened version of the 30km loop, following the 20km signs. 12km loop: This is marked with 10km markers5km loop: This will be made up of common ground with 5km arrows directing you around the track. This is the only event that will come back into base from the road.
Traffic management will be in place but you must still obey all road rules and where you reach an intersection, be careful to listen and look for approaching traffic. Read the loop signs or arrows carefully at each intersection and watch for arrows turning you. Riders No whips or spurs. If riding in unhealed foot wear, caged or approved safety stirrups must be worn. All helmets must comply with regulations and be tagged. Helmet tagging can be done on request. Please ensure you allow plenty of time if you need to get this done. For CTR riders, no GPS (distance monitoring) or time wasting is allowed.
