Ride Brief
This is a general ride brief and information. Please make sure you attend your ride briefing at the specified time during the weekend. You will be given track information at the ride brief on the day, along with important information about any hazards to be aware of. All riders MUST ATTEND, no exceptions
Ride BasePlease set up your pens/camp in a considerate manner, keeping in straight lines, and making sure all floats can get in and out easily. Do not park in laneways. See ride base map link below with further details on our facebook site.
Water on ride base will be from a selection of sources, both tanker and water troughs. Please bring your own drinking water but if you need to top up, Dave Hadler will be able to show you where to get it from, only during the day please.
Rider PacksYour rider pack can be collected from the Marquee from Thursday midday. If you are riding more than one day you will have a different bib for each day. The bib for each day will be marked with a sticky note. For those of you have ordered Nationals Polo Shirts, your shirt will also be in your rider pack. Vetting inYour pre-ride vet in time is included below. When you have finished your ride and come for your post-ride vet in, there will be an area marked in front of the vet ring where you need to call out “time” and your bib number. This is so Wendy can record your vet in time to ensure it is within the allocated time you have been given. If there is a queue at the vet ring and you are near the end of your vet time, make sure you let Wendy know you are there.
Prize givingThere will be a prize giving on Saturday for the 40km and below riders. This will be at approximately 4.00pm. The main prize giving is on Sunday after the event has completed. For those who have purchased prize giving meal tickets, these will be in your rider packs or handed to you directly if you are not a rider or with a rider.
General housekeeping 1. Manure - if you can take home, please do. Otherwise please bag (do not over fill) and put on the trailer supplied. 2. Hay/Feed - please pick up and take away any excess, both hold and pens must be left tidy as possible. 3. Rubbish - There will be both rubbish and recycling bins on site. Please use these as intended. Please do not place anything that is not recycling in the recycling bins. Once these are full, please do not over fill them, we need to be able to return them full and have them emptied. This service is a privilege, please use it as such.
4. Fire extinguisher - There will be a fire extinguisher in the Canterbury Club Trailer. Any emergency needs to be reported to Dave Hadler as soon as possible. Please use your common sense around this. 5. Dogs - no dogs allowed. 6. Smoking - no smoking on base or track On Track If your horse is used to being barefoot they should be fine, however there are river crossings, small areas of gravel etc that you cannot get off. 1. Track manners - Please be courteous of other competitors at all times. If you are with a group at water points, please allow those there first a chance to drink and move off before you allow your horse to drink. Many horses will be put off drinking when a strange horse approaches, it is particularly important to respect the horses competing over longer distances. Even if your horse is friendly, please keep space between you and other horses. Horses with red ribbons in their tails should be treated as if they could kick, blue ribbons are for stallions. You should give all horses as much space as possible for their safety and yours. If there are CTR riders at the finish line having heart rates taken, please be respectful of this.
2. Markers - Arrows/squares dazzled and reflective in various colours. Milk bottles dazzled and reflective, road markers dazzled and reflective. Hazard - orange reflective hazard crosses, road cones, double road markers. Loops signs - (40, 21, 19, 10 , 5) each loop will be separated by the distance you are following. Hazards will be marked at night with orange reflective hazard crosses or road cones or double road markers or both. Please take care to ride between double cones or markers. During the day there will also be dazzled milk bottles on hazards.
When on a track, stay on it until you are marked off it. There will be less confidence markers on defined tracks. Do not look behind you as there is common ground on all loops. The track is different from previous years. All gateways that you travel through will be marked, if they are not, please do not go through them. There are a number of creek crossings, you will come across two with double markers through them, please follow these and do not attempt to cross any bridges that you are not marked over. We have done our upmost to mark as many hazards as we have seen, however there could still be more, so please take care to keep an eye where you are riding. There are short areas of stony ground, rutted farm track etc to take with caution. When on the short road sections please give way to traffic. Road rules must be obeyed. Traffic has right of way. Please always be considerate when passing others. We will have a number of younger riders competing on Saturday, so please take extra care with them. 40KM LOOP (Red on map)Marked with 40km Loop Signs The track is a mix of farm lanes, flat paddocks, rolling hill, quiet country roads and river crossings. There are lake, mountain and Waimakariri River views. There is common ground, out and back for both the 40km and 19km loops. Please be aware that riders may be coming towards you. The river crossing is 4.5km out. The first paddock after this river crossing has stones hidden in the long grass. The track has been road marked around the least stony ground. There is a section of clay track which may be slippery if wet and has many large puddles on it. About 9km out you will go through a gate by some cattle yards, this has hazard crosses on both sides of the gate. For the next 1km there are hay bales and large white grain storage bags, plus keep an eye out for any farm machinery that has been left there.
At the railway crossing, LISTEN AND LOOK FOR TRAINS. DO NOT CROSS WHERE THE CARS GO, RIDE BETWEEN THE CONES ON THE SIDE over the bare rails. The wooden sleepers in the vehicle crossing have gaps which can trap a horse’s hoof.
Just after the check point there is a new section of track. Do not go where you have gone on previous rides but turn sharp right. When beside a tar seal road, the going is good on either side. If you are riding on the right side, you will be directed to cross over part way down as you are approaching a blind corner. About 16kms out, the track follows the top of a terrace. Keep to the fence side of the track, as the drop can be steep on the downhill side. At the end of this terrace, there is a sharp right-angle corner. Do not cut this corner, it is well marked for safety. Because this is such a scenic area of NZ, those riding this loop during the day may come across tourist buses and horse trekkers from about 18kms to 28kms. At 23kms you will be riding close beside the railway line for 1km. This is marked with a “Train” sign. Again, as the track is narrow in parts, stop, look and listen. There are some polywire fences in this 1km section but we have directed you into the paddocks beside them. Rejoin common ground when you recross the railway line. The track divides again just after a river crossing at 29kms. At about 32km there are double hazard crosses. The vehicle track from here is rough and rutted in places for the next 1.5km above the lake. The last 6km back to base is common ground.
21KM LOOP (Pink on map) Marked with 21km Loop Signs It is a mix of flat paddocks, farm laneways, rolling hills and creek crossings. At 3km out there is a check point where the track goes straight across SH73. There will be stewards at this road crossing. You will be stopped here and will wait for any oncoming traffic to pass. You will be directed by the stewards as to when you may cross the highway. This applies both on the way out and when returning to base. When you pass the house, there are dog kennels on the next corner. When riding up a steep ascent through forestry, watch for fallen branches in the long grass.
19KM LOOP (Blue on map) Marked with 19km Loop SignsIt is a mix of flat paddocks, farm laneways, rolling hills and river crossings. There is common ground out and back for both the 19km (20km Saturday) and 40km loops. In parts it is the reverse of the 40km loop, so be aware that riders may be coming towards you. The river crossing is 4.5km out. The first paddock after this river crossing has stones hidden in the long grass. The track has been road marked around the least stony ground. There is a section of clay track which may be slippery if wet and has many large puddles on it. At about 14.5km watch to be turned left off common ground and onto a new section of track for your return to base.
20KM LOOP SATURDAY (Light blue on map for 1km then Blue on map)Marked with 20 and 19km Loop SignsWhen you leave the ride base paddock follow the 20km loop signs for 1km. From then on you are following the 19km loop signs as above.
10KM LOOP (White on map)Marked with 10km Loop SignsThis loop is a mix of paddocks, creek crossings and farm laneways. Follow the 10km loop signs. Ride out to a check point. Here you turn around and ride back the way you came. Watch to be turned left off the common ground and onto a new section of track for your return to base.
5KM LOOP (Yellow on map)Marked with 5km Loop SignsThis loop is marked with orange 5km arrows and 5km Loop signs. Leave base in the opposite direction to all the other loops. Ride through the yard on the track where you drove in. On reaching the main drive, continue to follow the orange 5km arrows along farm laneways, paddocks and creek crossings. Return to base the same way you left, through the yard.
