Mt Somers

19-20 August 2023 Address - Mt Somers Station, Burnett Road, Mt Somers
RIDE BRIEF

This is a new ride for the Canterbury club to be hosting, although one that has been on the endurance/ctr calendar before under the wonderful Waitaki Club who has gifted us this venue. Big thanks to the land owner Dave Akland of Mt Somers Station who has allowed us to ride his fantastic station yet again.
The event officially opens at 5.30pm on Friday 18 August and will close on Sunday 20 August at 5pm. Camping is available for this period. Ride BriefThis is a general ride brief and information. Please make sure you attend your ride briefing at the specified time during the weekend. Important information will be given at the ride brief on the day, along with important information about any hazards to be aware of. All riders MUST ATTEND, no exceptions Ride BaseRide base is on Burnett Road, off Ashburton Gorge Road. It will be signposted off Ashburton Gorge Road. There are parts of the base that are too wet to park on so please take note of the base map to ensure you are parking in the right place. There will be water and toilets on base. Please refer to the ride base map below. BibsYour bib is available for collection from the Club Trailer. Please remove it from the plastic bag and leave the bag in the container. You will need to collect this prior to vetting in.Please return it to the Club Trailer when you have finished. Vetting inYour pre-ride vet in time is included below. When you have finished your ride and come for your post-ride vet in, there will be an area marked in front of the vet ring where you need to call out “time” and your bib number. This is so Wendy can record your vet in time to ensure it is within the allocated time you have been given. If there is a queue at the vet ring and you are near the end of your vet time, make sure you let Wendy know you are there.
Prize givingThere will be a prize giving at the end of each day along with a sausage sizzle and yummy cake. Please do stay around for this social event. We make every effort to try and time things to finish as early as possible but it does depend on when riders finish.
General housekeeping 1. Rubbish – rubbish, hay and feed to be collected and removed from base. Manure can be scattered. The base is to be left as you find it. Absolutely no rubbish is to be left on base or on the track. If you drop something, please make sure you pick it up. 2. Fire extinguisher - There will be a fire extinguisher in the Canterbury Club Trailer. Any emergency needs to be reported to Wendy Farnell or Dave Hadler as soon as possible. Please use your common sense around this.
On Track 1. Track manners - Please be courteous of other competitors at all times. There is common ground on the track so if you would like to pass, please ask if it is okay and give the competitor/s plenty of room. If you are with a group at water points, please allow those there first a chance to drink and move off before you allow your horse to drink. Many horses will be put off drinking when a strange horse approaches, it is particularly important to respect the horses competing over longer distances. Even if your horse is friendly, please keep space between you and other horses. Horses with red ribbons in their tails should be treated as if they could kick, blue ribbons are for stallions. You should give all horses as much space as possible for their safety and yours. If there are CTR riders at the finish line having heart rates taken, please be respectful of this. 2. Water – There will be good access to water on track with troughs and creeks. 3. Markers - Coloured arrows, and loop signs.
4. Course – The course is made up of farm lane ways, tracks and rolling farmland. There is some metal in the last section of the 20km loop. Horses that are used to being barefoot should be okay, but if in doubt, err on the side of caution and wear boots. 5. Riders - No whips or spurs. If riding in unhealed foot wear, caged or approved safety stirrups must be worn. All helmets must comply with regulations and be YELLOW tagged. Helmet tagging can be done on request at the vet ring by Wendy, but please ensure you have checked to make sure your helmet qualifies for yellow tagging. Check this link: 24621-ESNZ-Pony-Club-Helmet-Tagging-Card.pdf (nzequestrian.org.nz)Please ensure you allow plenty of time if you need to get this done. For CTR riders, no GPS (distance monitoring) or time wasting is allowed.
