Canterbury Championships - Cust Domain
Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th December 2023
111 Mill Road, Cust
Ride Brief
This is a general ride brief and information. Please make sure you attend your ride briefing at the specified time during the weekend. Track information will be explained at your ride brief on the day, along with important information about any hazards to be aware of. All riders MUST ATTEND, no exceptions
Ride Base This is a public Domain, there may be walkers, runners and riders not involved with us at this event. Please be very courteous and respectful of this. All areas outside of the base paddock, toilet block and start finish line are out of bounds. 100km & 80km riders Please enter base via Mill Road and follow the parking sign to enter the domain on your right. Please refer to the ride base map below to show you where you can camp, keeping in straight lines facing the domain. You must allow enough room behind you for trucks and floats to get past to access the other side of the domain. Please ensure you have looked at the map to save you from setting up then being asked to move. All other riders Please enter via Mill Road, drive past the buildings and playground on your right and follow the parking sign on to your part of the domain for camping or parking. Please refer to the ride base map below to show you where this is. No-one is permitted to enter the domain from O’Farrells Road as that is where riders will be exiting and entering.
Vetting in There will be an area marked in front of the vet ring where you need to call out “time” and your bib number. This is so Wendy can record your vet in time to ensure it is within the allocated time you have been given. If there is a queue at the vet ring and you are near the end of your vet time make sure you let Wendy know you are there. Prize giving There will be a prize giving at the end of each day. As there are endurance riders doing long distances on Saturday, there may be a little wait for those of you who have done shorter distances. We make every effort to try and time things to finish as early as possible but we do ask that you grab yourself something to eat from the complimentary sausage sizzle while waiting for all to finish. All results will be posted a couple of days later on our website.
General housekeeping 1. Rubbish - Manure/hay/feed to be collected and removed from base. Please bring plenty of plastic bags. If you are camping, please spread it amongst the trees around the perimeter of the domain. The domain is to be left as you find it. Absolutely no rubbish is to be left on base or on the track. If you drop something, please make sure you pick it up. 2. Fire extinguisher - There will be a fire extinguisher in the Canterbury Club Trailer. Any emergency needs to be reported to Wendy Farnell or Dave Hadler as soon as possible. Please use your common sense around this. Riders No whips or spurs. If riding in unhealed foot wear, caged or approved safety stirrups must be worn. For CTR, no GPS and forward motion must be maintained at all times. All helmets must comply with regulations and be tagged. If you are an Endurance Open rider then weigh in is compulsory and will be between 6.30pm - 7.30pm. If we could please ask that you are not late to this that would be appreciated. On Track 1. Track manners - Please be courteous of other competitors at all times. Passing - If you would like to pass, please ask if it is okay and give the competitor/s plenty of room. There will be some common ground on the track, so if everyone heads out on the left and in on the left where possible that will help the flow. Water points - If you are with a group at water points, please allow those there first a chance to drink and move off before you allow your horse to drink. Many horses will be put off drinking when a strange horse approaches, it is particularly important to respect the horses competing over longer distances. Rider courtesy - If there are CTR riders at the finish line having heart rates taken, please be respectful of this. Even if your horse is friendly, please keep space between you and other horses. Horses with red ribbons in their tails should be treated as if they could kick, blue ribbons are for stallions. You should give all horses as much space as possible for their safety and yours. 2. Strappers - If you have strappers that would like to be out on track to provide refreshments for horse and rider on the longer distances, we are introducing this as a new thing for Canterbury! There will be a dedicated spot for you to be which is indicated on the map below if you would like to do this :-) 3. Water – Troughs on the farms are all ok to use. There are tubs and buckets at various other places. Please let us know if the tub water is getting low. 4. Markers - Dazzled road markers, dazzled milk bottles, arrows, loop signs and road cones. Where there are two road markers or cones, ride between them, as this means there is a hazard nearby. Orange crosses mean caution, as there is a hazard or rough ground ahead. 5. Course – All loops leave base and turn left out of the Domain. Follow the markers and signs for the loop that you are riding. The loops are marked with 5km, 16km, 24km and 40km signs plus arrows of various colours. There are loop signs with arrows in all places where the loops divide. There is common ground on all loops. There may be riders coming towards you or off to the side, but just keep following the markers as directed for your loop. Don’t look behind, always follow the markers ahead of you. Most roads are quiet country roads, but for some short distances you may be on busier roads. These all have appropriate “Event” signs on them. You must still obey all road rules and where you reach an intersection, be careful to listen and look for approaching traffic. Please ensure that any shut gate is shut behind you. If you opened it, it is your responsibility that it is securely shut again. For those who have ridden the Cust ride before, there are many changes to the course, so please check all loop signs carefully and watch for turning arrows as each loop is different from the past. In some places, particularly on long straight roads, there are “warning” arrows prior to a turn off into farmland or another road. The actual turn off is well marked too. 40km Loop Follow the 40km loop signs. It is a mix of country roads, paddocks, farm laneways and some hill. Please keep to the wheel tracks when riding through the long grass, hay paddocks, or beside newly sown young grass paddocks. Watch for cyclists going both ways on the first tarseal road. Watch for the turn into farmland from this road. One of the roads has a number of road cones along it. These are marking stone sumps which can be hard to spot. There is common ground in both directions. Keep following the loop signs and arrows as you have been directed. 24km Loop Follow the 24km loop signs. It is a mix of country roads, paddocks, farm laneways and some hill. Please keep to the wheel tracks when riding through the long grass or hay paddocks. One of the roads has a number of road cones along it. These are marking stone sumps which can be hard to spot. There is common ground in both directions.
