Ride BriefThis is a general ride brief and information. Please make sure you attend you ride briefing at the specified time during the weekend, as this may have more details and important information. All riders MUST ATTEND, no exceptions. General housekeeping 1. Rubbish - Manure/hay/feed to be collected and taken with you. the base is to be left as you find it. Absolutely no rubbish is to be left on base or on the track. If you drop something, please make sure you pick it up. 2. Fire extinguisher - There will be a fire extinguisher in the Canterbury Club Trailer and in Ursula’s White Toyota Hilux. Any emergency needs to be reported to Ursula Keenan or Dave Hadler as soon as possible. Please use your common sense around this. 3. Helmet tagging - can be done on request. Please ensure you allow plenty of time if you need to get this done. ALL HELMETS MUST BE TAGGED.
Ride Base and Parking This is a public Domain, there may be walkers, runners and riders not involved with us at this event. Please be very courteous and respectful of this. All areas outside of the base paddock, toilet block and start finish line are out of bounds. Overnight Campers, please enter base via Mill RoadYou will then follow around the back of the pavilion and through to the back of the Domain. Parking is from the Orange “Parking” cones. Please keep the marked area to the right of this clear for a walk way for horses to the start finish.Day Competitors, please enter via O’Farrells RoadYou will be coming in the same entrance as the horses, so please take care when entering the base. As you come through the trees you will see cones to your right, please drive through here and park behind the cones. Sunday Day CompetitorsAvoid Mill Road from 8am – 10.30 am. The Oxman triathlon with 400 odd competitors will be coming through here, we would suggest entering from Tipping Road – Reids Road – O’Farrells Road. The Oxman organisers have been great to work with to ensure we all have a wonderful event! On Track 1. Track manners - Please be courteous of other competitors at all times. Passing - If you would like to pass, please ask if it is okay and give the competitor/s plenty of room. There will be some common ground on the track, so if everyone heads out on the left and in on the left where possible that will help the flow. Water points - If you are with a group at water points, please allow those there first a chance to drink and move off before you allow your horse to drink. Many horses will be put off drinking when a strange horse approaches, it is particularly important to respect the horses competing over longer distances. Rider Courtesy - If there are CTR riders at the finish line having heart rates taken, please be respectful of this.Even if your horse is friendly, please keep space between you and other horses. Horses with red ribbons in their tails should be treated as if they could kick, blue ribbons are for stallions. You should give all horses as much space as possible for their safety and yours. 2. Water – Troughs on the farms are all ok to use. There are tubs and buckets at various other places.3. Markers - Dazzled road markers, dazzled milk bottles, arrows, loop signs and road cones. Where there are two road markers, ride between them, as this means there is a hazard nearby. Orange crosses mean caution, as there is a hazard or rough ground ahead. 4. Course – All loops leave base and turn left out of the Domain. Follow the markers and signs for the loop that you are riding. The loops are marked with 16km, 24km and 40km signs and appropriate arrows. There are loop signs with arrows in all places where the loops divide. There is common ground on all loops. There may be riders coming towards you, but just keep following the markers for your loop. Don’t look behind, always follow the markers ahead of you. Most roads are quiet country roads, but for some short distances you may be on busier roads. These all have appropriate “Event” and “Caution Horses” signs on them. You must still obey all road rules and where you reach an intersection, be careful to listen and look for approaching traffic. Please ensure that any shut gate is shut behind you. If you opened it, it is your responsibility that it is securely shut again. 40km LoopThe track goes onto the Ashley Riverbed at about 10kms. Follow the milk bottles and road cones for the best footing to a different crossing from past years. Two road cones mark where to cross the river. There may also be 4WD vehicles and public using the riverbed. Once up onto the flat after the river, watch for the right turn into a farm lane. There is 9kms of new farmland. The track goes through some drilled crop paddocks with very young seedlings. PLEASE keep to the edge by the fence, go between any double road markers and PLEASE follow the road markers keeping you to the edges of the grass terraces. DO NOT ride out into the young seedlings. Once back out onto the road turn right between the road cones. The next road crossing is straight across a busy road. Please take care to stop, look and listen for approaching traffic before crossing to the gate. This gate must be closed behind you. Peacocks inhabit the next section of trees, so keep an eye out for them. The track here is a mix of farmland, quiet country road and forestry. You will pass the historic Birch Hill Cemetery. This has a memorial wall at the back to commemorate the horses from this district, which were sent to serve in the 1st World War and never returned. Take care again when re crossing the busy road. Continue straight ahead riding between the double road cones / road markers. Keep on this line. What looks like good going towards the paddocks contains, hidden in the mown grass, many deep post holes. These holes are well out from the current fence. After re-crossing the river follow 40km signs back to base. 24km LoopFollow the 24km loop signs. It is a mix of country roads, paddocks, farm laneways and some hill.16km LoopFollow the 16km loop signs. It is a mix of country roads, paddocks, farm laneways and some hill.5km LoopFollow the 5km loop signs. The track is quiet country road with some paper road.Event Loop Distances 100kms = 40, 24, 24, 16. 80kms = 40, 24, 16.40km = 40.24km =24.16km = 16.5km = 5. As there are endurance riders doing long distances the prize giving may be a little wait for those of you who have done shorter distances. We make every effort to try and time things to finish as early as possible but we do ask that you enjoy the bbq and social atmosphere while waiting for all to finish. All of the event Results will be posted a couple of days later on our website.
